RARE C.1885 GABRIEL RENVILLE ~ SISSETON WAHPETON LAKOTA CHIEF & INDIAN SCOUT

Description

Here is a rare c.1885 cabinet photograph of mixed blood Chief of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Lakota people Gabriel Renville (1824-1892).... He was also Chief of Scouts for the Minnesota State Militia in 1863 during the Dakota Wars. He reported to Colonel Henry Hastings Sibley who later became Governor of Minnesota.... The photographer was Henry Steinhauer of Groton and Webster South Dakota.  See the many online biographical references to Chief Renville's life.
The photograph measures 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. and is a little light but it does not detract from this very historical image. I have not verified the signatures on the front or back of the cabinet card. The photograph however
