    Description

Rare full-length portrait of Native American Sioux Chief Afraid of a Hawk, circa 1890. Silver gelatin photo measures 5" x 7", showing the Lakota Sioux Chief wearing a single coup feather headdress, loop style breastplate, beaded wool leggings and beaded moccasins. He holds a pipe with a decorated bead stem and catlinite bowl, and a large tobacco bag decorated with beads and quills. Photo has no photographic backstamp, but was likely taken at the Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota in the late 19th century. Photo a touch light, with mild foxing at top edge. Foxing and mounting remnants to verso. Overall very good plus condition. An uncommon image of the Sioux Chief.
