VERY RARE 1920 Photograph of Chocktaw Indian Tuberculosis PatientThe photograph measures 3 1/4” wide x 5 1/4” high and depicts Mary Pickens, a young Chocktaw Indian girl who was hospitalized at the Talihina Santarium for tuberculosis in May, 1917. The specific information regarding the provenance of the photograph is clearly written on the verso of the photograph, which is dated May, 1920 by J. Stropper.
The photograph also contains the typewritten caption:
“Mary Pickens, Roll No. 815 M, a tunercular patient who entered the sanitarium at Talihina in May, 1917, and was discharged a cured patient in March, this year. Now healthy & strong, doing all kinds of house-work. Shown in the picture grinding corn, Indian fashion. An example of what treatment at the sanitarium will do.”
